SUMMARY:VA COTE Building Tour: Highland Springs High School – Built for Performance
DESCRIPTION:Join AIAVA COTE and USGBC for our 2026 building tour series! We wish to celebrate exciting and innovative sustainable building design around the Commonwealth. Each month we will focus on a project in one of the five AIA Virginia component areas that has achieved LEED or other sustainable certification. Tours will provide AIA and USGC CEU’s for participants. \n\n\n\nJoin us for a tour of LEED Gold Highland Springs High School\, located in eastern Henrico County\, and experience how thoughtful design and public investment can deliver measurable energy\, health\, and community benefits. The building features an on-site solar PV array contributing to 54% whole-building energy cost savings\, supported by building-level energy metering\, demand-response participation\, and comprehensive commissioning of building systems and envelope. A strong emphasis on indoor environmental quality—including MERV-13 filtration\, low-VOC materials\, construction IAQ management\, acoustic performance targets\, and occupant thermal and lighting controls—supports healthier\, more productive learning environments. The project also showcases smart site reuse\, reduced water use\, dark-sky compliant lighting\, waste reduction\, and material transparency\, offering a replicable model for cost-effective\, resilient\, and community-focused public school design. \n\n\n\n*Attendees must bring identification and check in at the front office to obtain a VISITOR badge \n\n\n\n1 AIA LU | HSW 1 GBCI LU  \n\n\n\nAIA Member: $15USGBC Member: $15Non-Member: $30Students: FREE \n\n\n\nRegister Here>>

SUMMARY:Mental Health and School Design
DESCRIPTION:Join AIA NY for a panel discussion to explore the critical role school environments play in supporting student wellbeing and mental health. At a time when many students are struggling with trauma\, we will discuss the urgent need to design learning environments for healing as well as design strategies to support this. Our panelists are experts in education\, design\, and related fields. By sharing their experiences and insights\, they will highlight current trends in student wellbeing\, the role of both program and environment in supporting students holistically\, the types of spaces students gravitate to for healing as well as design methodologies that empower students as advocates for their own mental health. The outcome will be an understanding of the current mental health challenges students face and how school design can be leveraged to support student and community wellbeing. \n\n\n\nEarn 1.5 AIA LU|HSW \n\n\n\nSpeakers:Arnaldo D. SUMMARY:The Art of Practice
DESCRIPTION:Every other year\, AIA Virginia convenes a diverse cadre of decision-makers\, from firms of all sizes\, for a one-day forum designed to cultivate strong leaders and advance business practices. With a focus on creating and fostering a healthy firm culture\, both seasoned and emerging leaders will come together to share and learn best practices\, be challenged\, and be celebrated by their peers. \n\n\n\nThe 2023 Art of Practice will take place on Friday\, June 23\, at Common House Charlottesville. This year the theme will revolve around the concept of stress. Of course\, there are various forms and degrees of stress\, and they’re not all “bad.” Maybe your firm is stressed by having more work that your staff can manage! Our focus will include assessing your readiness for and planning for times of economic stress\, as well as considering the range of factors “stressing” our members. For example\, some have observed that the private sector is being shepherded into a kind of recession\, while those in the public sector are awash in unprecedented funding. \n\n\n\nOur keynote speaker is Sonya Ravindranath Waddell\, vice president and economist\, Federal Reserve Bank of Richmond. She will provide a macroeconomic view of where the practice of architecture fits into the U.S. economy and how federal policies impact Virginia firms. \n\n\n\nAttorney Joseph Cooch of Lee/Shoemaker PLLC will dig into issues of liability and risk management. How can firms gain resiliency through flexibility? What safeguards can be built into contracts? \n\n\n\nA representative from Atlantic Union Bank will address the specifics of readying a firm’s financial position\, from securing lines of credit to paying down or eliminating existing debt. Attendees will learn how banks assess their businesses when considering making loans. \n\n\n\nRegister
