SUMMARY:The Art of Practice
DESCRIPTION:Every other year\, AIA Virginia convenes a diverse cadre of decision-makers\, from firms of all sizes\, for a one-day forum designed to cultivate strong leaders and advance business practices. With a focus on creating and fostering a healthy firm culture\, both seasoned and emerging leaders will come together to share and learn best practices\, be challenged\, and be celebrated by their peers. \n\n\n\nThe 2023 Art of Practice will take place on Friday\, June 23\, at Common House Charlottesville. This year the theme will revolve around the concept of stress. Of course\, there are various forms and degrees of stress\, and they’re not all “bad.” Maybe your firm is stressed by having more work that your staff can manage! Our focus will include assessing your readiness for and planning for times of economic stress\, as well as considering the range of factors “stressing” our members. For example\, some have observed that the private sector is being shepherded into a kind of recession\, while those in the public sector are awash in unprecedented funding. \n\n\n\nOur keynote speaker is Sonya Ravindranath Waddell\, vice president and economist\, Federal Reserve Bank of Richmond. She will provide a macroeconomic view of where the practice of architecture fits into the U.S. economy and how federal policies impact Virginia firms. \n\n\n\nAttorney Joseph Cooch of Lee/Shoemaker PLLC will dig into issues of liability and risk management. How can firms gain resiliency through flexibility? What safeguards can be built into contracts? \n\n\n\nA representative from Atlantic Union Bank will address the specifics of readying a firm’s financial position\, from securing lines of credit to paying down or eliminating existing debt. Attendees will learn how banks assess their businesses when considering making loans. \n\n\n\nRegister

SUMMARY:Embodied Carbon 101: Process + Firm Culture
DESCRIPTION:AIA Richmond is partnering with Va. COTE to present Embodied Carbon 101 on Tuesdays through Oct. 4 from noon-1:30 p.m. \n\n\n\nLearn how to integrate sustainability work into your firm’s standard practices and procedures. \n\n\n\nIn order to make true progress toward carbon reduction\, carbon-thoughtful design must be part of the AEC industry’s standards and culture\, instead of approached on a project-by-project basis. Hear from sustainability leaders representing a range of practices\, including architecture\, engineering and consulting\, construction\, and design/build firms who share the vision and infrastructure of their own firms’ sustainability and embodied carbon practice\, and elaborate on how they arrived at a place where sustainable design and construction is built into their firms’ cultures. These leaders identify barriers to adopting carbon-thoughtful design and strategies for breaking down those barriers\, including leveraging existing cultural and industry structures (for example: the AIA 2030 Commitment) and strengthening the connections between the existing values of firm leadership (for example: operational energy reduction; for example: materials and occupant health) and carbon reduction. \n\n\n\nEarn 1.5 AIA LU|HSW

SUMMARY:Embodied Carbon 101: Making the Case
DESCRIPTION:AIA Richmond is partnering with Va. COTE to present Embodied Carbon 101 on Tuesdays through Oct. 4 from noon-1:30 p.m. \n\n\n\nLearn how to speak with clients and collaborators about embodied carbon to demonstrate the value of and pathways to reducing its impacts. \n\n\n\nAddressing embodied carbon in one’s practice requires strategy\, communication\, and collaboration. This course addresses how AEC practitioners can speak with clients and collaborators about embodied carbon to demonstrate the value of reducing embodied carbon and to provide pathways to reduce its impacts in projects and the environment. Learners will hear from sustainability professionals whose practices represent traditional architectural firms\, large engineering and consulting firms\, and small design/build practices who share approaches to reducing embodied carbon in cooperation with clients\, including: managing client choices by selecting and presenting low embodied carbon materials and designs; marketing and external communications; making the economic case for use of low embodied carbon materials and designs; drawing parallels between embodied carbon and materials and occupant health; and developing mutual goals and values with clients and project teams from the early stages of a project. \n\n\n\nEarn 1.5 AIA LU|HSW

SUMMARY:Embodied Carbon 101: Certifications + Commitments—A Deeper Dive
DESCRIPTION:AIA Richmond is partnering with Va. COTE to present Embodied Carbon 101 on Tuesdays through Oct. 4 from noon-1:30 p.m. \n\n\n\nLearn to evaluate and leverage certifications and commitments for the greatest impact. \n\n\n\nTake a closer look at how embodied carbon is incorporated—or will be incorporated—into sustainability programs for the industry and how carbon-thoughtful design is streamlined or incentivized through these programs. The course begins with a look at the established AIA 2030 Commitment\, its success in addressing operational energy\, and its next iteration\, which will include embodied carbon. The AIA 2030 Commitment discussion is followed by an introduction to the SE 2050 Commitment\, which is an embodied carbon-focused commitment born out of the Structural Engineering Institute\, to be launched in November 2020. \n\n\n\nAfter looking at example commitments\, the course introduces the International Living Future Institute’s Zero Carbon Certification\, a relatively new certification that looks holistically at operational energy and embodied carbon. And\, following Zero Carbon\, the Passive House certification is introduced\, suggesting ways that practitioners can account for embodied carbon while pursuing this performance-focused certification. Through discussing four major industry sustainability programs\, this course will help practitioners to distinguish where embodied carbon is built into certifications and commitments\, and where embodied carbon considerations might need to be engineered into design and certification processes for holistic carbon reduction. AEC practitioners will receive the knowledge to evaluate and leverage certifications and commitments for the greatest impact.

SUMMARY:Embodied Carbon 101: Certifications + Commitments—Overview
DESCRIPTION:AIA Richmond is partnering with Va. COTE to present Embodied Carbon 101 on Tuesdays through Oct. 4 from noon-1:30 p.m. \n\n\n\nExamine various aspects of certification programs including their incorporation of embodied carbon considerations. \n\n\n\nOur built environment is not as sustainable\, healthy\, safe\, equitable or inclusive as it needs to be. As design professionals we have the ability to address the global climate crisis and influence health and well-being. Health is a growing concern for homebuyers\, designers\, and builders alike. Building professionals are not health professionals\, but we have more influence on people’s health than we may realize. We also have tools to help influence building systems and components which impact not only health\, but embodied carbon and operation carbon outputs. The course includes comparisons of Indoor airPLUS\, Enterprise Green Communities\, LEED for Homes\, Passive House\, Living Building Challenge\, WELL Building Standard\, Fitwel\, and the Active Design Guidelines. The course explores the benefits and drawbacks to using certification programs\, looks at the influence they’ve had on code\, and discusses their impact on our built environment—including the ways that embodied carbon considerations do or don’t factor into each program. \n\n\n\nEarn 1.5 AIA LU|HSW

SUMMARY:Planning + Designing for Diverse\, Equitable\, and Inclusive Campus Learning Environments
DESCRIPTION:Join RWiD and Shannon Dowling online for a lunchtime learning program. \n\n\n\nOver the 2020-21 academic year\, Shannon used her position as a SCUP Fellow to engage with more than two dozen institutions around the topic of welcoming and inclusive physical campus environments. She interacted with 200-plus students to understand their comfort levels in different environments across campus and what design qualities drove feelings of inclusion and belonging. Drawing from student words and student work\, Shannon created a playbook that gives strategies for campus master plans\, facility plans\, and building renovations to reinforce the goals and metrics outlined in an institution’s strategic plan around inclusion\, belonging\, and student success. The playbook serves as a conversation starter: a way to get planners\, designers\, and university stakeholders to the table and move the needle towards a more supportive physical environment. How can stakeholders across an institution work together to ensure the physical environment is welcoming and inclusive to marginalized students? What values manifest in the built environment\, and what metrics can we apply to our projects to assure that our physical campus environments embody the mission\, vision\, and values of the universities they house? In this session\, Shannon will share her process and her research. Using highlights from conversations with students\, design solutions they proposed\, and strategies outlined in the playbook\, Shannon will illustrate how thoughtful planning and design can contribute to a more welcoming\, inclusive\, and thriving place for students to live and learn. \n\n\n\nEarn 1.0 AIA LU|HSW \n\n\n\n Learning Outcomes: \n\n\n\nDiscuss how physical space can contribute to belonging from the perspective of students.Assess your campus spaces from a DEI lens using specific criteria and metrics.Strategize quick wins for immediate campus impact and long-term investment to create cultural change.Develop collaborative design ideas that will help re-envision problem spaces on your campus.\n\n\n\nRegister online.
