Two historic facades of the Life Insurance Company of Virginia building (Clinton & Russell\, 1912) will be preserved and integrated into the new building; our design carries cornice and datum lines from the historic facades across the new facades\, framing a tripartite entrance portico facing the park and an identical entrance addressing Broad Street to the north. \nA double-height elliptical lobby will connect entrances from the park and Broad Street\, providing access to a business center and cafeteria with two large dining areas on the north and south sides of the building. A monumental stair will ascend to committee rooms on the second and third floors. From the fifth to the eleventh floors\, offices for assembly members will wrap additional committee rooms; above\, the tower will provide office suites for members of the Assembly and their aides. SUMMARY:Metromont Precast Manufacturing Plant Tour
DESCRIPTION:Metromont is large scale precast concrete manufacturing plant that supplies a wide variety of structural and architectural shapes to the mid-Atlantic region design community. These precast elements are incorporated into a multitude of different structure types from low- and mid-rise apartment buildings\, hotels\, nursing homes to industrial facilities and parking structures. The plant operator guided tour will highlight many of the benefits of using precast in structures including durability\, quality assurance and versatility to name just a few. Attendees will have the opportunity to see preparation\, placement\, and finished products within a single 2 hours tour window. There will be ample opportunity for Q&A both from the plant operations perspective as well as the in-house engineering operations. \nThis plant tour will highlight the many of the reasons precast elements are a vital tool in the architects portfolio to achieve a wide variety of performance\, quality and aesthetic desirables. DESCRIPTION:With the Amber Book video series he’s created (see a sample here)\, Michael Ermann\, AIA\, has helped 12\,000 emerging professionals study for the ARE. He was the first person in the nation to pass all six ARE 5.0 divisions\, and has taught intensive three-day courses at AIA New York\, AIA Miami\, AIA Dallas\, AIA Houston\, AIA Raleigh\, AIA Northern Virginia\, AIA New Orleans\, AIA New Mexico\, AIA Alaska\, and AIA Washington DC. \nThe small portion of the course he’s posted on YouTube has more than 6 million views and more than 30\,000 subscribers. In 2019 AIA Virginia gave him its Award for Distinguished Achievement for his live’s work as an educator. It also recognized his book\, Architectural Acoustics Illustrated (Wiley\, 2015) with its Prize for Design Research (it was the second time he won this research award). Michael is a full tenured professor at Virginia Tech where he’s taught design studio\, building systems\, materials & methods of construction\, and advanced architectural acoustics for 20 years (including many of you in the Richmond area). DESCRIPTION:“The North Atlantic Cities” by Charles B. Duff\, which is available for the first time in the United States\, is a book on urban development and urban life masquerading as a book on architecture. It is the story of four hundred years of architecture and urban development in four countries: the Netherlands\, Great Britain\, Ireland and the United States\, particularly cities like New York\, Boston\, Washington D.C.\, Philadelphia\, Baltimore\, Savannah\, to name a few. \nThe author starts with a kind of building few others have considered – the row house\, which could very well be the key to understanding why many of the world’s great cities look and function as they do. DESCRIPTION:Join AIA Richmond and AIA Northern Virginia for a jointly held virtual event on the award-winning short film “Silo City.” The film was awarded second place in the 2020 AIA Film Challenge. \nHear directly from architects Studio V Architecture and film-maker Jake Catalanotto about the importance of this transformative project to the city of Buffalo. “The Buffalo grain elevators at Silo City once fueled the growth of the city – but now they are abandoned. This site can be a hub for the cultural and economic resurgence of Buffalo\, a place of connection for the communities it once failed\, and an experiment in creating a sustainable American city.” \nThe story of the creation and development of this project is a compelling example of the power of design to bring about positive change in communities. SUMMARY:March Lunch & Learn: Optimized Acoustics
DESCRIPTION:Complying with the more stringent acoustic performance criteria in the standards\, guidelines\, and building rating systems has become more challenging in today’s predominantly larger and more open commercial interiors. This is in part due to trends towards more reflective floor materials\, fewer walls\, and an abundance of glass. Higher amounts of sound absorption are required to limit reverberation\, increase speech intelligibility and prevent widespread noise disturbances. This presentation will educate designers on achieving the required amount of noise control using high-performance\, modular\, acoustic ceilings. In locations where transmission of noise from one room into another needs to be prevented\, the use of ceilings alone as sound blockers\, for example when the demising wall stops at the ceiling level\, no longer complies with the standards\, guidelines and rating systems. This presentation will educate designers on blocking sound using walls and lightweight plenum barriers so that their designs comply not only with user expectations\, but also the higher sound isolation criteria in the acoustics standards and guidelines. \nEarn 1.0 AIA LU | HSW \nRegister online. \nPresented in collaboration with Rockfon.

DESCRIPTION:This course provides an introduction to the process of evaluating existing buildings and designing them for a new use other than the original design or construction intent.  This program will explore environmental\, architectural\, site\, structural and building system aspects of any adaptive reuse building project.  It will also provide guidance for the initial stages of design. \nSubmitted for approval to offer 1.0 AIA LU | HSW \nPresented by David W. Spriggs\, PE\nMr. Spriggs is currently a Principal at Draper Aden Associates\, working generally out of their Cary\, NC and Richmond\, VA offices. He has over 30 years of experience in analysis and design of structural systems for commercial\, residential\, industrial and institutional buildings\, working with multi-discipline teams. His work has often involved alterations and additions to existing buildings as well as new construction. Specific experience includes: Development of laser scanning and BIM protocols for existing building investigations; design of structural steel\, masonry\, reinforced concrete\, prestressed concrete\, structural wood and cold-formed metal systems; and analysis and design of retaining walls and foundation systems. Mr. Spriggs is a licensed Professional Engineer in VA\, NC\, SC\, FL AL\, WV\, MD\, DC\, DE and PA.

SUMMARY:Egyptian Places: An Illustrated Travelogue
DESCRIPTION:Join us for an overview of Richmond architect Henry David Ayon’s recently-released book Egyptian Places. The monograph focuses on 12 sacred sites of ancient Egypt whose individual characteristics are described by written architectural commentary and illustrated by over 200 hand rendered drawings and graphic studies. \nThe volume’s chapters are organized by individual sites and the drawings attempt to convey the unique architectural features and the mythic ethos of each place through visually rich\, detailed drawings that convey the sense of these massive edifices set in a stark desert terrain. \nCentral to the book’s evocation of the architectural distinction of the buildings is the hand rendering technique utilizing sepia pencil and markers to create a simulation of the colors and chroma of the landscape. Numerous drawings were scanned after the initial pencil sketch and manipulated in Photoshop to apply sepia coloration in various percentages of density\, thereby illuminating different aspects of a particular scene or artifact. \nEarn 1.0 AIA Learning Unit \nRegister below:
